How-to

How to block a number on iPhone

A step-by-step guide to blocking an unwanted number on iPhone — from calls, messages, and settings.

Blocking from the Phone app

Open Phone → Recents, find the number, and tap the "i" icon next to it. Scroll down the card and tap "Block this Caller," then confirm.

Blocking from Messages or a contact

The same works from Messages: open the conversation, tap the name or number at the top, then the "i" icon and "Block this Caller." If the number is saved in Contacts, open its card and scroll down to "Block this Caller."

One shared block list

All blocked numbers — from calls, messages, and FaceTime — live in one place: Settings → Phone → Blocked Contacts. You can add a new number manually there, or unblock one.

Good to know

  • Blocked calls don't even show up as missed, but stay visible as a "blocked call" in a separate part of the log
  • Blocked messages never arrive and never trigger a notification
  • Settings → Phone → Call Blocking & Identification lets you enable third-party spam-identification apps
  • Blocking only applies on that device — if you have several Apple devices sharing a number, block it on each, or rely on iCloud sync if it's enabled
